Nightlife Unlike England and Wales, licensing laws in Scotland allow for much variation: bars may stay open all day, until 0000 or only between 1230-1430 and 1830-2300; however, only those 18 years or over will be served. There are over 700 pubs and bars in the city - evidence that Glaswegians like a tipple now and again - as well as numerous nightclubs catering for all musical tastes. Bars: The Horseshoe, 17 Drury Street (tel: (0141) 229 5711), has the longest continuous bar in the UK, but it is still hard to get a place at the weekend, there are karaoke events, and the reasonably priced three-course lunch is popular. Bargo, 80 Albion Street (tel: (0141) 553 4771), is a popular pre-clubbing venue in the Merchant City district. The stylish industrial-influenced interior provides the setting for the mixed crowd that shows up for the designer brews and international cuisine. Bar Ten European Café Bar, 10 Mitchell Lane (tel: (0141) 572 1448), just off Buchanan Street in the heart of the city, is a popular and stylish bar with food. Casinos: The main venues include the Stanley Berkeley Casino, 506-516 Sauchiehall Street (tel: (0141) 332 0992), the Stakis Riverboat Casino, 61 Broomielaw (tel: (0141) 226 6000) and the Rotunda Casino Club, 28A Tunnel Street (tel: (0141) 204 1238). Dress code is smart and only those over 18 years are allowed entrance. Clubs: As in most cities, the club scene in Glasgow is ever evolving, and the music and atmosphere of a venue can change from night to night. Check out The List or get some local advice if you do not like surprises. The Riverside Club, 33 Fox Street (tel: (0141) 248 3144), hosts ceilidh dances at the weekend, drawing an energetic crowd. The Tunnel, 84 Mitchell Street (tel: (0141) 204 1000), is one of Glasgow's largest clubs and has some top DJs spinning different styles of house each night, with a more eclectic mix in the second room. The Sub Club, 34 Queen Street (0141) 26 8990), offers different sounds on different nights - drum'n'bass, hip hop, hard house and techno are among the options. The Polo Lounge, 84 Wilson Street (tel: (0141) 553 1221), is a popular gay bar, playing a mix of camp dance tunes and 80's pop sounds. Live music: Tickets for most events can be purchased at Tower Records, Argyll Street (tel: (0141) 204 2500) and Virgin Megastore, Buchanan Street (tel: 0141) 353 2993), or through the Ticket Centre (tel: (0141) 287 5511 or (0870) 040 4000). Large-scale pop and rock concerts take place at the SECC and the Clyde Auditorium as well as at the Barrowland Ballroom, 244 Gallowgate, near the Barras market. There are several other smaller venues in the city. Bourbon Street, George Street (tel: (0141) 552 0141), has some jazz, as well as tribute bands. Best bets for folk music include O'Neill's, Queen Street (tel: (0141) 229 5871), for Irish music and Park Bar, Argyle Street (tel: (0141) 339 1715), for Highland sounds. |
